For all the book lovers out there, here are my top favorite bookstores in Chattanooga. If I missed your personal favorite, be sure to tell me about it in the comments.

Best Independent Bookstores in Chattanooga

Winder Binder

The vibe at Winder Binder

Winder Binder sells a mix of used and new books (including some antique and rare books) along with records and some gift items. I really love how well-curated the used book section is because sometimes stores with used books can feel overwhelming to look through.

The store is also a good place to pick up some Chattanooga-related books. It’s such a fun, eclectic spot to browse.

The Book & Cover

Classic books on display at The Book & Cover

The Book & Cover is a cozy bookstore housed in a cute little bungalow. It carries a good selection of new books and has lots of little nooks where you can sit to enjoy coffee, reading, or have a conversation with friends.

I absolutely love the children’s section of the store. The murals on the wall feature whimsical scenes from beloved storybooks.

It’s absolutely worth a visit!

The Reading Room

Floor-to-ceiling shelves filled with used books at The Reading Room

The Reading Room is a neighborhood bar and bookstore, which is a perfect combo. The inside is gorgeous and moody with lots of seating for chatting with friends along with spots at the bar.

All of the used books lining the wall are for sale for $8 each, and there’s a wide range of titles. Beverages available include beer, wine, cocktails, mocktails, tea, coffee, and a few other non-alcoholic options. There are a couple bar snacks available on the menu as well.

Pennington’s Books

Seating at Pennington’s Books

At Pennington’s Books, you can browse used and new books, get a cup of coffee, and buy local art. I love that they stock books by Walnut Street Publishing, which is based in Chattanooga.

Overall, the store is a cool place to hang out, and it’s such a great addition to the local literary scene.

McKay’s

There are so many books at McKay’s

McKay’s has two Tennessee locations – one in Chattanooga and one in Nashville. Both stores are giant, two-story buildings filled with used books, records, movies, video games, toys, and more.

You never know what exactly you’re going to find on the shelves, but you’ll definitely find plenty to take home. You can sell items for store credit or cash as well.

I do find McKay’s to be kind of crowded, but it’s also one of the best places to leave with a stack of cool books without spending too much money.
