McGaugh’s Donuts Serves Classic Donuts in Madison, Tennessee

Half a dozen donuts from McGaugh’s

McGaugh’s Donuts has been a staple in Madison, Tennessee since 1991. The shop, owned and operated by Mack and Renee McGaugh, first opened under a different name but has kept customers coming back for years. Since I’m always up for trying out donut shops, I had to make a stop to see what McGaugh’s was offering.

McGaugh’s offers a variety of donut flavors as well as other sweet treats including cinnamon rolls, apple fritters, bear claws, and eclairs. Most donut flavors are the standards you’ll find at most donut shops, but I don’t think I’ve seen a few flavors like Oreo or coconut in many other places.

Ordering Donuts at McGaugh’s

The parking lot at McGaugh’s is a bit small, but it seems like most people use the drive-thru anyway.

You can go through the drive-thru or inside the dining room to order. The drive-thru line was several cars long when I arrived on a Saturday morning, so I decided to head inside instead. Plus, I like to see what I’m ordering when it comes to donuts.

Compared with most of the donut shops I usually visit in Nashville, McGaugh’s has incredibly well-priced donuts. During my first visit in 2022, regular donuts were under $1 each and specialty items were under $2 each. I ordered half a dozen donuts for the same price I generally get maybe 2 or, if I’m lucky, 3 donuts in other places.

Now (in 2024) the regular donuts are a little over $1 and the specialty items are a little over $2, but that’s still reasonable for the city.

White-iced, maple, and chocolate-iced donuts from McGaugh’s

I tried out the maple donuts, the white-iced donuts, and the chocolate-iced donuts with sprinkles. The fruity pebbles donuts also looked appealing, but I was out of room in my half-dozen box when I decided I might want to try it. So, I’ll have to go back another time for that one. The donuts aren’t fancy gourmet donuts, but they are decent classic donuts. I would choose McGaugh’s over coffee chain donuts any day.

I’ve seen people say McGaugh’s are the best donuts in Nashville. They’re not technically in Nashville, but while they are better than some other donut shops I’ve tried, I don’t know that they’re better than every single other shop. (I’ll write a post with my favorite donut shops once I’ve had a chance to sample a few more shops around Nashville. I’ve got a whole spreadsheet and everything.)

This visit probably won’t be the only one that I make to McGaugh’s though. If I lived closer, I might be one of the people lining up at McGaugh’s every Saturday morning.

If you’re looking for a non-fussy, classic donut shop where you make a once-a-week donut run, McGaugh’s is the place for you.

McGaugh’s Donuts is located at 1111 South Gallatin Pike, Madison, TN 37115. Visit their website to see their hours and preview the donut options.
