The Taylor Swift mural at Grimey’s

If you’re a music fan, you need to know about Grimey’s New & Preloved Music in East Nashville. While there are other cool record stores in Nashville like the Groove and Third Man Records, Grimey’s certainly has the most going on.

I’ve visited Grimey’s a number of times (especially when they get new murals related to albums I’m excited about).

The Backstory of Grimey’s

Grimey’s was first opened in a tiny shop in Berry Hill in 1999. Two friends opened the shop together (and still own it today). The original plan was for the record store to be a place to buy records, obviously, but also be a place of community for people who love music.

Clearly, something right was going on because Grimey’s outgrew two different locations. The current (and hopefully permanent) location now is a converted church in East Nashville. While Grimey’s is not a music venue, there are lots of performances by artists, so it’s nice that there’s enough room for a bit of a crowd inside.

What You’ll Find at Grimey’s

Me at Grimey’s (clearly I take the most photos when T-Swift is involved)

Like the name says, Grimey’s sells both new and preloved music. So, you’ll find the latest cds, tapes, and vinyls as well as used versions as well. Honestly, I don’t know that you’ll find new tapes here because I don’t think a lot of new music is being released on cassette tape. They do sometimes carry special items that artists release, so if an artist releases a tape version of something, you might find it as Grimey’s

You’ll find the biggest releases at Grimey’s, but you’ll also find a good amount of music by local artists. Grimey’s does a good job of promoting local artists with listening parties, signings, and other special events.

Larger artists do events in connection with Grimey’s, too. I was able to meet Kasey Musgraves and have her sign a copy of her new album Deeper Well when it was released. I did have to wait in line for a long time, but overall, the event was handled well. I suggest keeping an eye on Grimey’s social media to find out when things are happening if you live in the area.

More murals

One downside to Grimey’s is that since it is so popular, the used vinyl tends to get picked through pretty quickly. There’s just so many people coming through that your chance of finding something outstanding is pretty low. This is kind of a problem with Nashville in general–since it is Music City–but it’s especially noticeable at Grimey’s.

Grimey’s is in a two-story building, so you’ll want to go downstairs as well while you’re there. I love that there’s a book section down there. It’s not a huge selection, but the titles are usually pretty interesting. Some are music related while others are not. There are also more albums downstairs as well.

I will say that I’m really not sure how to get to the bottom level without the stairs. The staff could probably direct you on what to do, but it’s not readily apparent. I haven’t gone in with my daughter in a stroller yet. I imagine most people will be more interested in the floor you enter on anywhere. This is where most of the action is and where signings and performances are held.

One thing that I have to note is that, according to my husband, the staff is not usually super interested in talking about music when you’re just casually going in to pick up an album. He’s much more of a music person than I am. If you’re interested in that side of visiting record stores, Grimey’s may not be perfect for you. I don’t usually try to chat when I’m checking out.

Overall, Grimey’s is worth visiting if you’re in the Nashville area, especially if you’re a huge music fan in general. It’s one of the places that I typically bring my friends when they visit Nashville, so I definitely recommend going!

Grimey’s is located at 1060 E Trinity Ln, Nashville, TN 37216. You can find out their hours and more info on their website.
