Fox’s Donut Den: Nashville’s Classic Donut Shop

Fox’s Donut Den in Green Hills is a classic donut shop that’s been making customers happy since 1976. It feels a little odd to even bother reviewing this place because they are clearly doing something right.

During the summer of 2020, I went to Fox’s Donut Den basically every Friday. Partly because it’s conveniently located near a library that was offering curbside service at the time, and partly because that summer was difficult and I just needed a good donut at the end of each week.

Fox’s Donut Den Review

The donuts are exactly what you expect a donut to be–tender with just enough firmness. Every bite provides a delightful rush of sugar. Nashville has many gourmet donut shops, but Fox’s Donut Den proves that sometimes classic is the way to go.

The price is also nice compared to other shops in Nashville. When you order a dozen donuts, you don’t immediately regret that decision as soon as the total rings up at the register.

Fox’s obviously has donuts on the menu, but they also have several savory options. You’ll need to get there early to snag a sausage biscuit, kolache, or yeast roll with country ham. I’ve never actually gotten to Fox’s quite that early, but if something sells out that quickly, it’s probably good.

The shop itself feels retro and nostalgic–like the place your best friend’s mom would go to pick up donuts for breakfast after a Friday night sleepover. The shop’s decor is a palate of primary red, blue, and yellow, and there are shelves and shelves full of donuts.

My only complaint is that the donuts aren’t labeled. This isn’t a problem for the ones that are easy to describe, but I don’t always know the name of everything that looks good. Sometimes, you have to do a combination of guessing/pointing until you get the one you want.

Fox’s Donut Den is right across from the Green Hills Mall, so it’s an easy five-minute addition if you’re already at the mall anyway.

The shop opens at 5 a.m. most mornings. I’d assume that the donuts are best right then. But, as much as I love donuts, I will not be at Fox’s quite that early, and I can assure you that the donuts are still excellent later in the day as well.
