Get Delicious Catfish at Cock of the Walk in Nashville

Last updated: 3/18/24

One of the restaurants I never hear anyone mention in Nashville is Cock of the Walk. Despite the name, this restaurant is best known for its catfish, not its chicken. The catfish chain has two other locations–both not too far from Jackson, Mississippi.

Since I grew up going to the Cock of the Walk in Pocohantas, Mississippi, there was no way I was going to skip trying out the Nashville location. Here’s what I thought!

Spoiler: We go here pretty often!

Location and Atmosphere

Cock of the Walk has kind of an odd location in Music Valley. It’s not far from the Grand Ole Opry. The restaurant is tucked away off the main street through the area, and you have to drive past a number of hotels to get there.

The restaurant has a welcoming, homey atmosphere with wood-paneled walls and signed photos of country music stars. It feels exactly the way that a good catfish house should.

Food

The catfish plate

Because the chain is based in Mississippi, it should be no surprise that they know how to cook catfish. A few reviews I’ve read mention the limited menu, but honestly, the menu could easily be even more limited. Cock of the Walk has chicken and shrimp available in addition to catfish. You should really get the fried catfish though.

We tried the shrimp once, and it wasn’t bad. Still, the shrimp just wasn’t as good as the catfish.

Fixens include coleslaw, hushpuppies, onions, cornbread, and fries. With all those sides, the half order of catfish is more than enough (for me, and probably you). I’d also suggest getting an order of fried pickles. The coleslaw and the cornbread are just as good the next day–-you will have leftovers!

Service

Clearly, we’ve been to Cock of the Walk plenty of times. The service has always been great. Based on the layout of the parking lot and the different rooms inside, the restaurant looks like it caters to group tours. It’s possible wait times are longer when large groups arrive. We’ve never run into that problem though.

If you’re craving catfish, Cock of the Walk is currently my top recommendation. It’s also a great choice if you’re looking for a meal near the Grand Ole Opry or Opry Mills Mall.

Doesn’t sound quite right for you? Uncle Bud’s in Donelson is another popular choice in Nashville for catfish.

Cock of the Walk is located at 2624 Music Valley Dr, Nashville, TN 37214. See their website for opening hours and the menu.
