Rendezvous, an Iconic Memphis Barbecue Spot

Updated 4/2/25
Memphis is famous for its barbecue, and Rendezvous has been the place to go for dry rub ribs in Memphis for well over half a century.
I first visited Charlie Vergos’ Rendezvous while a student at Ole Miss. The atmosphere has never disappointed and neither has the food. Some might say that the restaurant has become overrated, but you really can’t spend time in Memphis without going to Rendezvous at least once. I even put it on my suggested 1-day itinerary for Memphis.
Here’s what you need to know if you’re planning to visit this Memphis institution.
Rendezvous has an unusual location
From the entrance, the restaurant doesn’t look like much. Rendezvous is actually located in a basement (in a building across from the Peabody).
Inside, though, the restaurant is surprisingly large, which is good because some weekend nights thousands of customers come for a plate of barbecue.Â
The atmosphere is very casual. Expect red checkered tablecloths and plastic utensils. Your order is usually taken pretty quickly so start looking at the menu as soon as you’re seated.
On the Menu

As you probably expect the menu at Rendezvous revolves around meat although there are a few vegetarian options.
The ribs are definitely one of the most popular things on the menu. I also like the pork sandwiches.
You should be aware that the barbecue here is a dry rub so it may be different from what you’re used to with other styles of barbecue. I’ll be honest that I’m actually not a huge fan of a dry rub when it comes to barbecue, but that’s what Rendezvous has been doing since way before I was born. It seems to be working for them.Â
Another thing I suggest trying out are the pies. The mini pies are delicious and just the right size that you can actually finish eating one after all that barbecue.
Does Rendezvous live up to the hype?
Rendezvous feels like the kind of place that would be described as a hidden gem except that it hasn’t been a secret in decades.
Despite Rendezvous’ popularity, it still feels authentic rather than gimmicky. And the prices are decent for being located in the downtown of a major city.
There are literally over 100 places in Memphis to get barbecue, so I’m not even going to attempt to single out one spot as the best barbecue spot in the city. But, I’d still recommend giving Rendezvous a try if only to say that you’ve been.
